![]() There may be a solution though to get in touch with more modern computer hardware again. Since we are considering older products, who will want to pay several thousands or more to switch to a USB dongle or way more than that to switch to a new CNC controller or a new measurement or communication system? And what if the manufacturer is no longer active? Some of this stuff is still perfectly fit for purpose, be it for professional or for personal non-profit purposes and if you keep it on for backward compatibility you probably have no interest in serious investments either. Some hard- and software suppliers will of course provide you an upgrade option, and some even do so at a fair rate. So the basic USB to parallel adapter will not work on a measurement system, a hardware adapter interface, a CNC production tool or a parallel port dongle. Other hardware depending on a true parallel port, direct memory address use or interrupts will not be supported. Although most USB style converters will work fine for legacy printers, they only provide a windows printer port and not true LPT functionality. People interested will, like me, keep older laptops or laptops with extensive docking station options active just because of this parallel port issue. ![]() You may no longer have an active update / upgrade subscription, or the manufacturer may no longer be active, but you as a long term professional end-user or new personal user are left with a problem.įor a desktop user a solution will most times be available using an add-on PCI express card, but most laptop users will not be this fortunate. ![]() Not because the software is no longer suitable, not because it is not supported by newer Windows operating systems, but simple because the old trusty parallel port is no longer present on new computer hardware. For a number of people today there is a problem running legacy software or controlling hardware.
